Zugspitze, mountain, south central Germany, part of the Wettersteingebirge Range of the Bavarian Alps. Situated near the border with Austria, it is 2,962 m (9,718 ft) high and is the highest mountain in Germany. At the base of its northern face is Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a popular winter resort, from which a railway leads to the summit, and an aerial cable car runs to the summit ridge from the Eibsee, a lake at the foot of the mountain. A second cable car service connects the western face to Ehrwald, Austria.
