Joseph Mankiewicz

Joseph Mankiewicz (1909-1993), American film director, producer, and scriptwriter, born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He began his film career in 1929 as a scriptwriter, working on Manhattan Melodrama in 1934. He became a producer in 1936; his work includes Fury (1936), by Fritz Lang, Three Comrades (1938), Huckleberry Finn (1939), The Philadelphia Story (1940), and Woman of the Year (1942). He also produced and was co-author of the screenplays of The Keys of the Kingdom (1944) and The Late George Apley (1947). His directorial debut came in 1946 with Dragonwyck. Mankiewicz went on to win Academy Awards for his writing and direction of Letter to Three Wives (1949) and All About Eve (1950). He also directed House of Strangers (1949), Five Fingers (1952), Cleopatra (1963), and Sleuth (1972).
