Neckar, river, south-western Germany, a major tributary of the River Rhine. Rising in the Black Forest, near Villingen-Schwenningen, the Neckar has a winding, northerly course of 367 km (228 mi), past Stuttgart and Heidelberg, before joining the Rhine at Mannheim. The picturesque river is navigable, and along part of its course are vineyards and castles.
