Ancient Rome
Balsdon, J. P. V. D. Life and Leisure in Ancient Rome. London: Bodley Head, 1969. A classic of its type: well-written, full of information and anecdote, and certainly the best one-volume guide to Roman life.
Balsdon, J. P. V. D. Roman Women. London: Bodley Head, 1962. An essential account of the less well documented half of society.
Barrow, R. H. The Romans. Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1949. A brief and easily readable examination, by a great scholar, of the essence of what it was to be a Roman.
Grant, Michael. The World of Rome. London: Weidenfeld and Nicholson, 1960 An excellent introduction to the Romans, still of interest to the more serious student. The chapters on art and architecture are very useful.
Hammond, N. G. L., and Scullard, H. H. The Oxford Classical Dictionary. Oxford University Press, 1970. Essential work of reference.
Rostovtzeff, M. The Social and Economic History of the Roman Empire. Oxford University Press, 1957. A huge and comprehensive work of enormous scope: not for the beginner in the subject.
