With his portrayals of tragic anti-heroes, the French actor Jean Gabin (1904-1976) became the biggest star of French cinema in the 1930s. His best known films from this period were Pépé le Moko and La Grande Illusion (both 1937), Quai des Brumes (1938; Port of Shadows), and Le Jour se Lève (1939; Daybreak). This picture was taken in 1960.
