Korean War

On June 25, 1950, North Korean Communist soldiers armed with equipment from the Soviet Union invaded South Korea. The South Koreans were quickly over-run and requested help from the United Nations. The United States flew troops from Japan to Pusan at the southern tip of Korea on July 1 and other UN troops soon followed. By October, UN forces had advanced as far north as the Yalu River, which forms Korea’s border with Communist China. Later that month, China entered the war, sending in 780,000 troops. UN troops retreated back toward the 38th Parallel. An armistice line was formed July 27, 1953, north of the 38th Parallel along the battleline.
