Battle of Tannenberg

Battle of Tannenberg
German soldiers in trenches, protected by their machine guns, during the Battle of Tannenberg in August 1914. In one of the most decisive battles of World War I, German troops under the leadership of Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff crushed the invading Russian army. Of 150,000 Russians, only 10,000 escaped the German encirclement—some 95,000 were taken prisoner.
