During World War I, Constantinople (since 1930, İstanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, was under blockade by the Allies. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire was deeply traumatic for the city—it was under Allied occupation between 1918 and 1923, and the threat of violence caused many civilians to leave.
