Monastery Town

Known as Zagorsk during the Soviet era, the town's name has reverted to Sergiyev Posad in honour of St Sergius, founder of the Trinity Monastery around which the town originally grew. This national hero helped mobilize the country against the hated Tatars and blessed the army of Dmitry Donskoy before it became the first Russian force to defeat the Tatars in 1380. The Trinity Monastery remains one of Russia's most important religious and historical sites.
