Fishermen sort out nets on the beach at Şūr, in Lebanon. The Lebanese have maintained close ties with the Mediterranean since the days of the early Phoenicians. These industrious traders established powerful city-states along the country's coast centuries ago. Lebanese mariners may have sailed around Africa long before the Portuguese.
