Kathakali Dance Drama

World-famous Kathakali dance drama originated more then five hundred years ago in the city of Cochin in India's narrow coastal Kerala. The performers, exclusively male, wear intricate makeup, painted masks, and elaborate costumes. Using dance and movement, they act out stories from Indian mythological epics. To keep the art alive, the Indian government runs a Kathakali dance school.
