Modern Sofia
The site of Sofia dates back to about 29 bc when it was captured by the Romans. The modern city, capital of Bulgaria, was laid out in the late 19th century. Since then, Sofia's character has been influenced by plans conceived in the 1930s and by Soviet-style building that began in the 1950s. The city, which lies on a plain surrounded by mountains, is graced by wide streets and spacious parks.
