Tower of London
The famous fortress of the Tower of London has stood on the north bank of the River Thames for more than 900 years. The original tower, known as the White Tower, was built around 1076 by King William I. Over the centuries the Tower of London has been used as a royal residence and state prison, as well as a fortress. Today it is primarily a museum, attracting thousands of visitors who come to see the Crown Jewels and the Yeoman Warders, or Beefeaters as they are popularly known. The well-preserved Norman and medieval structures cover nearly 7.5 hectares (18 acres).
