On August 6, 1945, during World War II, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, a Japanese city and military centre. About 130,000 people were reported killed, injured, or missing, and another 177,000 were made homeless. Sixteen hours after the attack, US President Harry S. Truman’s report of the event was broadcast to radio listeners.
