After the death of his father, Johann Strauss I, the younger Strauss consolidated his own orchestra with that of his father and toured Austria, Poland, and Germany. He earned the title “Waltz King” because the waltzes he performed, composed by his father and himself, came to epitomize the gaiety and sentiment of Vienna during the 19th century. In 1863 Strauss was appointed Imperial Music Director in Vienna, where he performed for court balls until 1871 when he turned to the theatre and composed operettas.
