An important characteristic of Turkish music is the solo improvisatory tradition of vocal and instrumental forms. Generally the performer begins with a few short phrases centred around one of the primary pitches in one of many specific tone scales, known as maqam, and then gradually expands upon his or her own melodic interpretations. This example features the saz, a pear-shaped, long-necked, plucked lute that is probably the most important stringed instrument in the history of Ottoman music and culture.
