Reflecting the region’s multicultural heritage, the songs and dances associated with flamenco are made up of Arabic, Berber, African, Sephardic Jewish, European, and Roma (Gypsy) influences. There are a number of song types and dances now associated with flamenco that are distinguished by melodic stanza, pitch, tempo, rhythm, phrase length, ornamentation, and vocal quality. This is an example of the soleares song type. In this style, the guitar sets the mood for the song, and the vocalist takes it up with an expressive, long vocalization on the syllables “ay” and “lelí”.
