| The Muslim Ottoman Turks had conquered regions that surround the Mediterranean Sea, including parts of Europe, by the end of the 16th century. A series of wars with Russia, Austria, and Poland in the 17th and 18th centuries reduced and weakened the empire, which was finally dissolved at the end of World War I. | ||||||
