| Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord was a French statesman and diplomat. Talleyrand served as Napoleon’s foreign minister but left the emperor to help restore the French monarchy and the Bourbon kings. Though France had been ravaged by Napoleon’s wars and defeated by Britain and its allies, his diplomatic skill at the Congress of Vienna helped restore some of his country’s status in Europe. | ||||||
