The peregrine is a large breed of falcon found throughout the world. Peregrines can reach 38 to 50 cm (15 to 20 in) in length, with the females substantially larger than the males. The number of peregrines fell dramatically in the middle of the 20th century as chemical pesticides adversely affected reproduction of the species. In North America, a successful captive breeding programme and the prohibition of certain pesticides have aided the peregrine’s recovery.
