| Genoa developed into an important maritime power during the Middle Ages, constantly competing for control of the Mediterranean with Pisa and Venice. This painting by Cristoforo de’ Grassi from 1481 (held in the Civic Naval Museum in Pegli) shows a great deployment of ships about to leave the city’s port. | ||||||
