Battle of Caporetto

Battle of Caporetto
Shown here are civilians who were forced to leave their village following the Battle of Caporetto in 1917. In October 1917 a massive Austro-Hungarian and German attack was launched on the Italian front. Exhausted by long months of bloody offensives and counter-attacks, the Italians were defeated at Caporetto (now Kobarid, Slovenia) and withdrew in a disastrous retreat to the Piave, where, reinforced by French and British troops, they later stopped the advance of the enemy.
