Derek Jarman
The film director Derek Jarman was one of Britain’s most innovative film-makers. His homosexuality was central to his work and many of his films explore an eroticized vision of the male body. Caravaggio (1986) is a biography of the 16th-century painter, which highlights the erotic nature of his work. In his final work, Blue (1993), the screen is suffused with blue light as the soundtrack portrays Jarman’s life with AIDS.
