Martyrdom of Thomas à Becket

Martyrdom of Thomas à Becket
Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas à Becket was murdered by Henry II’s men in 1170. Thus, Becket became a martyr and was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1173. Canterbury became one of the most popular shrines in Europe, until it was destroyed by Henry VIII during the Reformation.
