Giotto's Flight Into Egypt

Giotto's Flight Into Egypt
Flight Into Egypt is part of Giotto’s large fresco cycle illustrating the lives of the Virgin and Christ in the Scrovegni (Arena) Chapel in Padua. The Arena Chapel was begun in 1303 and Giotto’s frescos are usually dated c. 1305-1306; they run right around the interior of the building. His figures have a completely new sense of three-dimensionality and physical presence, and he seems to base his representations on personal experience. His emphasis is on the human and the real rather than on the divine and the ideal.
