Jacques Necker

Jacques Necker
The Swiss-born financier Jacques Necker was a key figure in French political life immediately before the French Revolution. Dismissed in 1781 as chief financial officer to the French crown, he was reinstated in 1788 to public acclaim. He suggested the convening of the Estates-General in 1789, and when Louis XVI dismissed him again that year, the people of Paris stormed the Bastille. Unable to control what he had unleashed, Necker retired to Switzerland in 1790.
