Revolt on the Amistad

Revolt on the Amistad
This 1839 engraving depicts African captives taking over the ship Amistad and killing several members of its crew. The revolt occurred off the coast of Cuba while the Africans were being taken to a plantation to serve as slaves. After the US Supreme Court determined that the Africans had been illegally kidnapped and enslaved, they were allowed to return to Africa.
