War was revolutionized during World War I. When the conflict began in 1914 there was effectively no mechanization or armoured weapons, aircraft were few and untried, and cavalry was still considered vital. As the war descended into trench deadlock, the technology of defence, in the form of artillery, machine-guns, and barbed wire, dominated the battlefield. As the industrial strength of the great nations was mobilized, other methods of warfare, such as poison gas, were introduced. Only towards the end of the conflict did the technologies and tactics of attack and communication, particularly in the form of the tank, begin to catch up with those of defence, thus bringing more fluidity to the war.
