Louis XIV
Known as the Sun King because he chose the Sun as his royal emblem, Louis XIV encouraged French artists and writers, while also building the most militarily powerful nation in Europe. Louis’s aim was to achieve French superiority, in war or in peace. This portrait of the king is by French painter Hyacinthe Rigaud, and is in the Prado, Madrid.
