The Battle of San Romano

The Battle of San Romano
The Battle of San Romano (c. 1435), Paolo Uccello. This scene, which hangs in the Uffizi gallery in Florence, forms the centrepiece of three panels commissioned by the Medicis to celebrate the defeat of Siena by the Florentine cavalry at San Romano on June 1, 1432. The panel depicts the moment when the Sienese commander Bernadino della Ciarda was knocked from his horse in battle and is a notable example of vanishing-point perspective. In the foreground, della Ciarda’s white horse rears up on its hind legs amid a tangled mass of knights, lances, and fallen horses, while converging lines and the differing perspective of the hunters and animals in the background give the impression of depth.
