Stalin

Joseph Stalin was a skilled and ruthless political operator. He successfully aligned himself closely with Lenin (though Lenin later became deeply concerned about Stalin's personality). After Lenin's death in 1924 Stalin manipulated alliances between different factions in the Communist Party to enhance his own position. This enabled him to systematically remove the "old Bolsheviks" who had led the 1917 Russian Revolution. Stalin was believed to be planning another purge at the time of his death in 1953.
