Civil war erupted in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the republic declared its independence in 1992. Ethnic Serbs who opposed the declaration battled for territory against Croats and Muslims. Many cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina were reduced to rubble. Here, government employees in Sarajevo clear the damage after a government building was struck by an artillery shell.
