Serbian Orthodox Church
This Serbian Orthodox church is located in the city of Sarajevo. The area of the Balkan Peninsula that is now Bosnia and Herzegovina was conquered by different invading peoples throughout its history, and these invaders influenced the culture of those who remained in the region. For that reason, Bosnia and Herzegovina is home to both Orthodox Serbs (influenced by the Byzantine Empire) and Muslims (influenced by the Ottoman Empire). During the early 1990s this diversity led in part to a full-scale civil war that threatened to destroy Bosnia and Herzegovina.
