Integration in the South

Integration in the South
The legacy of slavery dissipated slowly in the southern United States. Mississippi resisted the integration movement that gained momentum during the 1960s with violent clashes over the desegregation of public schools. Federal marshals facilitated the desegregation of the University of Mississippi in 1962. James Meredith, the first black student to attend the institution, is seen here (centre) being escorted by Justice Department officials on his first day at the university.
