Fort Langley, British Columbia

Fort Langley, British Columbia
The Canadian province of British Columbia originated as a fur-trading territory in the 1800s. Much of the region was explored and settled early on by European fur trappers and traders. The Hudson’s Bay Company built Fort Langley in 1827 as their first coastal trading post. The trading company became influential in the region, and when the colony of British Columbia was formed in 1858, the British government named the company’s chief official, James Douglas, as its first governor. Here, Douglas is shown arriving at Fort Langley in 1858.
