KGB Statue Torn Down
The KGB, or Committee of State Security, disbanded when the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics collapsed in 1991. This dreaded secret police agency was led by F. E. Dzerzhinsky from 1917 to 1926. In 1991 his statue outside the KGB headquarters in Moscow was torn down by demonstrators.
