In this excerpt from the epic poem, the Iliad (translated by W. H. D. Rouse, and recited by an actor), Trojan and Greek armies gather for the Trojan War (c. 1260 bc), the classic battle of Western mythology. In the meantime, the gods gather to debate the fate of the humans—whether they will allow them to settle their dispute in a civil manner, or whether they will put the forces in motion that will ensure total destruction for both sides and for an entire civilization. Attributed to the ancient Greek writer Homer, this epic poem dates from c. 8th century bc.
