Russian writer Anton Chekhov, one of the foremost writers in Russian literature, wrote stories and plays noted for their original narrative technique. Chekhov focused predominantly on themes and imagery rather than on plot development. Sonia, a character from Chekhov’s 1899 play, Uncle Vanya, utters the words in this excerpt (recited by an actress) partly as a prayer and partly as a hope. However, her apparent frustration is meant to convey a sense of futile despair to the audience.
