Robert F. Kennedy served as United States Attorney General from 1961 to 1964, as a US senator from 1965 to 1968, and was a Democratic presidential candidate in 1968. He was assassinated in June 1968 while leaving a celebration in Los Angeles following his victory in the California election. Kennedy gave the speech heard here after the assassination of civil-rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., in April 1968.
