Alfred North Whitehead

Alfred North Whitehead
Alfred North Whitehead, a British mathematician and metaphysician, collaborated with fellow British mathematician Bertrand Russell on the book Principia Mathematica, in which they discussed the logical foundations of mathematics. For centuries mathematicians had advanced their studies without understanding exactly how mathematics worked. The three-volume Principia identified and formalized the basic assumptions of mathematics and demonstrated how familiar truths, such as one plus one equals two, followed from them.
