In the Gymnopedies, Erik Satie used static harmonies and melodies of folk-like simplicity to create a timeless evocation of grace and beauty, inspired by ancient Greek pottery showing young boys dancing. Most of Satie's works are for piano, and most share the clear textures, modal harmonic language, and undemonstrative gestures of this work.
