The ancient music of Korea was highly developed by the 15th century. Although influences from Japanese and Chinese music played a role in its development, Korean music remains distinct from the music of it neighbours. Korean music is characterized by abundant rhythms and melodic inventiveness that leave the performer a wide range of choices. This example demonstrates the virtuosity and free expression used to play the ancient komun’go, a six-string, rectangular zither. The komun’go is accompanied by the changgo, a large hourglass-shaped drum.
