| Since the first successful manned balloon flights in 1783, hot air balloons have been flown primarily for pleasure, although the military made extensive use of them in World War I. Occasionally raced for sport, the colourful globes are more commonly seen hovering in the skies during the summer, when visibility is high and the flights are generally serene. These hot air balloons flew at the 1986 International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. | ||||||
