İsmet İnönü
İsmet İnönü was elected president of Turkey in 1938, on the death of Atatürk, and remained in office until 1950. Under İnönü,Turkey remained neutral through much of World War II, only declaring war against the Axis in 1945. After the war, the country chose to form important economic and military alliances with the United States (and later NATO), to counterbalance attempted Soviet infiltration. İnönü also democratized the Turkish regime and allowed the introduction of opposition parties, a move that would eventually lead to his defeat.
