Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence, a principal leader in the American War of Independence, and the third president of the United States. Jefferson is also regarded as a great political thinker and diplomat. The US doubled its area in 1803 when he bought the huge territory west of the Mississippi then known as the Louisiana Purchase.
