German U-Boat

German U-Boat
German submarines, or U-boats, blockaded the British Isles from February 1915. They took a heavy toll on Allied shipping, having abandoned the principle of evacuating civilian vessels before sinking them. In May, a German U-boat torpedoed a British passenger liner, the Lusitania. It sank in less than 20 minutes off the southern coast of Ireland, killing 1,198 passengers, including 128 Americans. This incident almost brought the United States into the war two years before its actual entry in 1917.
