In the late 1930s, while filming propaganda for the Fascist regime of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, Roberto Rossellini documented his own life in Rome. He incorporated some of this footage in his trilogy about World War II, which brought the Italian Neo-Realist style to international attention.
