Jean-Baptiste Racine

Jean-Baptiste Racine
Considered one of the greatest French dramatists of classical tragedy, the poet and writer Jean-Baptiste Racine adapted heroic characters and tragic themes from ancient Greek and Roman literature in his works. His most successful plays include Phèdre (1677), one of the seven tragedies deemed his masterpieces. In Phèdre, the protagonists become embroiled in a drama of extreme passion which ends in tragedy and the degradation of its heroine through the guilt of her incestuous love. The work creates a disturbing picture of a world in which the gods are evil.
