Peggy Guggenheim

Peggy Guggenheim
An heir to the Guggenheim fortune, which derived from numerous mining and smelting industries located throughout the world, Peggy Guggenheim, born in New York City in 1898, was one of the first collectors of abstract and Surrealist art. She opened art galleries and helped advance the career of many well-known artists, such as Max Ernst (to whom she was briefly married), by bringing their works to the public eye. In her galleries Guggenheim displayed some of her collection of abstract and Surrealist art, but she assembled the majority of the collection in her palazzo in Venice.
