Once a province of the Ottoman Empire, Bosnia is made up of Muslim Slavs mixed with a minority population of Serbs and Croats. The culture and music of Bosnian village life maintain ancient songs and dances from both the Islamic and Christian populations. This example of a popular folk ensemble from a predominantly Muslim village near Sarajevo features pre-Islamic, Slavic two-part singing, Turkish-influenced improvisational instrumental and vocal techniques, and elements of American pop and country and western music. The Turkish ŝargija is paired with two violins along with electric guitar and drums.
